Line Crossing Stories
Talk about your experience at Realgrey, what has it meant to you?
Realgrey is all about my/our music. Now one might think, of course it is, isn't that what a recording studio does? But having recorded with other folks, I could appreciate how Ron and his staff were carefully atuned to the sound we wanted, to our personal ways of work and even our insecuries about the process and our own contributions. Ron and his staff created a space that felt both professional and like working with friends.
How would you describe the ethos ... experience ... purpose of the studio?
There's a lot of psychology at work in the creative process. Fun, yes, but not always easy. I appreciated that Ron was listening to us, as musicians and as people. The ability to pivot when needed, to start with a plan, then be willing to go where the music and musician need to go, these are important qualities for creative people and certainly true of the Ron and the Realgrey staff.
Has the studio influenced your music in any way? If so, how?
I think that the act of recording is a growthful act. It requires that you commit. You are hammering out the public face and the definitive arrangement of something that may have been a long time in the works. Decisions are made. A bookmark is placed the point of recording. For me, that influences my music in that I must be the 'decider'. Realgrey Recording is a good place for those critical decision to be made. I would say that the act of making those decisions influences my music.
