Wrestling with the Bad News: Guy Randall
“Play me the bad news,” Guy Randall sings, his voice a little like Don Henley, a little like Joe Cocker. The riffs, the words, are bluesy for certain, but they are also full of tender, honeyed, existential soul. Randall has been playing the bad news for nearly a decade now, and wrestling with it for much longer. After working many years as a firefighter medic, he was beginning to suffer what would later be diagnosed as chronic PTSD. Encouraged to pick up a guitar, Randall began putting chords behind the songs he had been writing in his head. The guitar became therapeutic and in the ensuing years, he worked the coffeehouse/local bar circuit, honing his craft and discovering the artist within. Lately, he’s been working with Ron at Realgrey, pushing his songs into a fuller, more expansive sound to fill out his sojourning poetry: washes of Hammond organ, sleek guitar riffs.
